Illinois receives $1.7 million to keep seniors connected to services during COVID-19

Illinois has received $1.7 million in federal funds to provide services to older adults and persons with disabilities who are disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a statement last week from Illinois’ Department of Aging and Department of Human Services.

The funds, from the Administration for Community Living, will be used to purchase technology devices and improve Internet access.

The devices will have applications for telehealth, as well as those like Zoom to help individuals stay connected with family members, friends and providers.

The agencies will work in tandem to identify clients, customers and participants who may be at risk of social isolation and would benefit from such devices. Funding will be prioritized for those who live alone, those who do not normally receive in-home services and those in rural communities.

“We are excited to announce this grant with (the Department of Aging) and provide additional assistance to some of our most vulnerable residents in Illinois,” said Department of Human Services Secretary Grace Hou.
