There’s a growing push to pay providers for keeping patients healthy instead of racking up the number of services they provide, with the promise of high-quality, affordable care. But, while a number of Illinois organizations are advancing along the value-based care continuum, hurdles remain. Computer systems needed to collect patient data are expensive to update. Incentives and rules designed to promote value-based care continue to shift. Some providers are reluctant to take on more financial risk. And trust issues between key groups persist.
