IDPH reports 17,485 more COVID-19 cases, 284 deaths over weekend

Illinois saw 17,485 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend, bringing the state’s total number of cases to 787,573.

The state’s death toll rose to 13,255 after 284 more deaths on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s 208 deaths were the second-highest, single-day number reported during the pandemic.

As of Saturday night, 5,160 Illinoisans were in the hospital with COVID-19, a decrease of 698 from last week. Of the patients in the hospital this week, 1,103 were in the ICU and 643 patients were on ventilators, the latter a decrease of 80 from last week.

Twenty-eight percent of Illinois’ 32,586 hospital beds were available as of Sunday morning.

Twenty percent of the state’s 3,316 ICU beds were available as were 70 percent of the state’s 5,700 ventilators.

The seven-day statewide positivity rate for cases as a percent of total tests was 10.1 percent on Sunday, the same as last week. The preliminary seven-day statewide test positivity using the number of COVID-19 positive tests over total tests was 11.8 percent, a 0.3 percent decrease from last week.

The department also announced Friday that all but one of Illinois’ 102 counties are at a “warning” level for COVID-19. Champaign County was the lone exception.

Additionally, the department announced Friday 480 new COVID-19 deaths at long-term care facilities over the past week, an increase of 215 from the prior week.

The new deaths bring the total number of COVID-19 deaths linked to Illinois long-term care facilities to 6,527.

At least 50,418 long-term care facility residents or workers have tested positive for COVID-19, an increase of 4,536 from the prior week.
