Raoul files lawsuit against FDA over abortion drug regulations
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul has joined nearly a dozen attorneys general in a lawsuit against the Food and Drug Administration over regulations on an abortion drug.
The agency placed additional regulations on mifepristone, one of two drugs used in medication abortion. The restrictions, known as Risk Evaluation & Mitigation Strategies, intend to “reinforce medication use behaviors and actions that support the safe use of that medication,” according to the FDA’s website.
The regulations apply to 60 out of more than 20,000 FDA-approved drugs. Along with mifepristone, other drugs with these restrictions include fentanyl and some other opioids.
“The science clearly shows that mifepristone is safe, which is why I am urging the FDA to remove these burdensome restrictions that limit access to safe and effective healthcare,” Raoul said in a statement.
An FDA spokesperson said the agency does not comment on pending litigation.
