Illinois COVID-19 metrics stay level, highest single-day number of deaths reported since February

Illinois’ COVID-19 metrics are staying level, though the Department of Public Health on Tuesday reported the highest single-day number of deaths in over five months.

As of Monday, 1,458 Illinoisans were in the hospital with COVID-19, up six from Sunday and up eight from the prior week.

Of the patients in the hospital, 167 were in intensive care units, up 19 from Sunday and up five from the prior week. Nineteen percent of Illinois’ ICU beds were available, the same as the prior week.

There were 59 patients on ventilators, up 10 from Sunday and up seven from the prior week.

Fifty-nine counties are now at a “high” community level of COVID-19, the level at which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people mask indoors in public spaces. Thirty-four counties are at a “medium” risk level.

IDPH reported 4,068 new COVID-19 cases and 51 deaths on Tuesday. It’s the highest single-day number of deaths since 70 were reported on Feb. 26.

The new cases bring the state total to 3,608,217, while the death toll is at 34,483.

The seven-day average for new cases on Tuesday was 4,175, down 252 from the prior week. The seven-day average for daily deaths is 17, up 12 from the prior week.

The seven-day case rate per 100,000 people is 32.8, down 1.9 from the prior week.

Illinois vaccinators have administered 23,082,591 COVID-19 vaccines, including 4,705,965 booster doses. The seven-day average for doses administered is 9,095.
