NorthShore Orthopaedic & Spine Institute expands to support growing demand

In response to increasing demand for care, the NorthShore Orthopaedic & Spine Institute in Skokie, IL opened eight new state-of-the-art operating rooms, giving surgeons and patients access to 20 total operating rooms dedicated to expert musculoskeletal surgeries and care.

“Musculoskeletal conditions are the leading cause of disability in the United States,” said Jason Koh, MD, Mark R. Neaman Family Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery at NorthShore Skokie Hospital, where the Institute is based. “Adding operating rooms expands our mission as a destination hospital for the latest treatments in orthopaedic and spine conditions and provides greater access for patients.”

The Institute’s operating rooms contain advanced robotic and computer assisted technologies that help surgeons deliver exceptional outcomes personalized to the anatomy of each patient. “Beyond the operating space, the specialty hospital employs multidisciplinary teams that work collaboratively with surgeons to minimize pain and expedite recovery for patients,” added David Rahija, President, NorthShore Skokie Hospital.

The additional rooms dedicate over 180,000 square feet to the specialty hospital campus which performs more orthopaedic and spine surgeries than any other hospital in Illinois. The construction project also included the opening of twenty-six pre- and post-surgery rooms, eight pre- and post-anesthesia recovery bays, a redesign of the waiting room and new signage to enhance the patient experience.

NorthShore Orthopaedic & Spine Institute’s specialty hospital in Skokie opened in 2019 and is the only hospital dedicated to orthopedic and spine care in Illinois. It is nationally ranked in U.S. News & World Report’s Annual Best Hospitals listing for 2021-22.
