Illinois continues to see spike in COVID-19 metrics

COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations continue rising in Illinois, with the state’s Department of Public Health reporting Tuesday an increase of over 1,000 new daily cases from last week.

The seven-day average for new cases is 4,618, up 1,058 from the prior week. The seven-day average for daily deaths is 22, up four from the prior week.

IDPH reported 4,589 new COVID-19 on Tuesday and 17 deaths. The new cases bring the state’s total to 1,779,842, while the death toll is 26,294.

As of Monday, 1,958 Illinoisans were in the hospital with COVID-19, up 125 from Sunday and up 331 from the prior week.

Of the patients in the hospital, 365 were in the ICU, up 24 from Sunday and up 50 from the prior week. There were 154 patients on ventilators, up one from Sunday and up 22 from the prior week.

The seven-day statewide positivity rate for cases as a percent of total tests is 3.3 percent. The seven-day statewide test positivity using the number of COVID-19 positive tests over total tests is 4.1 percent.

About 78.1 percent of eligible Illinoisans ages 12 and older have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 71.3 percent are fully vaccinated.

Illinois vaccinators have administered 16,956,232 COVID-19 vaccines, per state data. The seven-day average of doses administered is 63,199.
