Sinai Chicago unveils Barbara Bates Imaging Center

Sinai Chicago dedicated the new Barbara Bates Imaging Center at Mount Sinai Hospital during an unveiling ceremony on Tuesday, November 9. The clinic’s name honors Barbara Bates, an internationally renowned fashion designer, founder of the Barbara Bates Foundation and longtime supporter of Sinai Chicago.

“I am delighted to celebrate our partnership with the Barbara Bates Foundation and to honor the work of so many who contributed to our comprehensive breast health clinic,” said Karen Teitelbaum, President and CEO of Sinai Chicago. “Sinai Chicago is happy to be able to offer these critical services for our community in a newly renovated space that will provide the highest quality of breast health services possible.”

Bates’s foundation advances breast cancer awareness, education, and health care for the patients and communities served by Sinai Chicago. “As a breast cancer survivor myself, a center like this is important for the communities and patients that Sinai serves. This center is an example of health equity in action –competing with the bigger institutions, but here on the West Side,” said Barbara Bates, Founder of Barbara Bates Designs & Director of the Barbara Bates Foundation.

The newly renovated center will offer all of the breast health services Sinai Chicago currently offers, complemented by high-quality diagnosis and breast cancer treatments with state-of-the-art mammogram and breast imaging services. The new space will offer a more welcoming and comfortable environment for patients coming in for screening and diagnostic mammograms, as well as imaging services that support treatment of breast cancer.

Donations from the Barbara Bates Foundation, staff, community members and donors will help Sinai Chicago further invest in breast imaging services by adding 3D imaging capacity as a service line starting in 2022. This type of imaging has been shown to significantly improve breast cancer detection rates and ensure providers are able to offer the best care possible.

“Our ultimate ambition is to build a nationally accredited breast center of excellence that will mitigate some of the health disparities that diminish our neighborhoods,” said Dr. Erica Guzalo, Section Chief of Mammography of Sinai Chicago. “That’s the vision we hold and work towards every day, and this donation from the Bates Foundation will help make our goals possible.”
