IDPH reports highest single-day number of COVID-19 cases since January

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 5,178 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, the highest single-day total since January.

The new cases bring the state’s total to 1,528,120. Wednesday’s new cases are the first time the number has eclipsed 5,000 since 5,152 new cases were reported on Jan. 23.

There were 26 more deaths reported Wednesday, bringing the death toll to 23,979.

As of Tuesday, 2,242 Illinoisans were in the hospital with COVID-19, an increase of 45 from the prior week. Of the patients in the hospital this week, 512 were in the ICU, down three from the prior week, and 283 patients were on ventilators, an increase of 43.

The seven-day statewide positivity rate for cases as a percent of total tests is 5.1 percent. The seven-day statewide test positivity using the number of COVID-19 positive tests over total tests is 5.6 percent.

Nearly 77 percent of eligible Illinoisans ages 12 and older have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Almost 60 percent are fully vaccinated.

Illinois vaccinators have administered 13,950,756 COVID-19 vaccines, per state data. The seven-day average of doses administered is 39,922.
