Attorney General backing lawsuit by family planning groups against Trump policy
Attorney General Lisa Madigan joined 19 other attorneys general Tuesday in filing an amicus brief in support of a preliminary injunction blocking President Donald Trump’s efforts to reduce access to family planning services funded under Title X.
In February, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a new set of criteria for Title X funding, prioritizing facilities that promote natural family planning methods and abstinence-only education over those that provide comprehensive reproductive healthcare.
Three Planned Parenthood chapters, along with the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association, followed up with a lawsuit, arguing that the new funding requirements conflict with the underlying Title X statute and regulations.
“Title X funding provides critical healthcare services to low-income women and families across Illinois, and I will fight to ensure those families continue to have access to healthcare,” Madigan said in a statement.
There are more than 90 Title X clinics in Illinois serving more than 100,000 people, according to Madigan.
